6.1 Moet ik geld geven aan een bedelaar? Hoe ga ik respectvol om met mensen in nood? Moet ik geven zonder vragen te stellen? Waarom grijpt God niet in?
Solidariteit betekent dat mensen materiële en geestelijke goederen eerlijk onder elkaar verdelen. Het is een christelijke plicht om te geven en met anderen te delen van wat we hebben (Mat 5,42; Luc 6,30). Het is een antwoord op het gebod om je medemens lief te hebben (Mar 13,29-31). Menselijke waardigheid is een van de belangrijkste grondslagen voor een christelijk leven. Je bent niet meer waard omdat je toevallig iets bezit dat je weg kan geven; de ander verdient jouw waardering en liefde.
Kijk dakloze personen die je tegenkomt altijd in hun ogen en laat zien dat je hen als personen ziet, als medemensen. Misschien wil je hun wens voldoen door hun te geven waarom ze vragen. Je hebt ook de verantwoordelijkheid niet iets te geven dat slecht voor hen is. Je zult met je geweten moeten onderscheiden hoe je hen het beste kunt helpen. God helpt de armen door jouw handelen! Als je Hem je verstand, je handen en bezittingen aanbiedt, kan Hij heel veel doen om de kwetsbare mensen in je omgeving te helpen.
By what is love for the poor inspired?
Love for the poor is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes and by the example of Jesus in his constant concern for the poor. Jesus said, “Whatever you have done to the least of my brethren, you have done to me” (Matthew 25:40). Love for the poor shows itself through the struggle against material poverty and also against the many forms of cultural, moral, and religious poverty. The spiritual and corporal works of mercy and the many charitable institutions formed throughout the centuries are a concrete witness to the preferential love for the poor which characterizes the disciples of Jesus [CCCC 520].
How is human solidarity manifested?
Solidarity, which springs from human and Christian brotherhood, is manifested in the first place by the just distribution of goods, by a fair remuneration for work and by zeal for a more just social order. The virtue of solidarity also practices the sharing of the spiritual goods of faith which is even more important than sharing material goods [CCCC 414].
