6.16 Hoe kan ik mij in mijn baan inzetten voor God? Heb ik recht op werk? Is werkloosheid onchristelijk? Wat nu als ik moet kiezen tussen de Kerk en mijn werk?
God droeg de eerste mensen op ‘de aarde te bewerken’ (Gen 2,15). Dit gaat over iedere nuttige bezigheid, ook thuis of als vrijwilliger. Werk is een manier om invulling te geven aan onze menselijke waardigheid, God te dienen en zo aan onze heiligheid te werken. Het recht van ieder mens op werk brengt tegelijkertijd de verantwoordelijkheid met zich mee om goed werk af te leveren.
Als ieder mens recht heeft op werk, is het schandalig als niet iedereen kan werken. Ook in Jezus tijd waren er mensen zonder werk en Hij laat zich lovend uit over een man die hun werk geeft (Mat 20,1-16). We moeten er alles aan doen om voor iedereen banen te scheppen. Misschien moeten we soms kiezen tussen naar ons werk of naar de kerk gaan, maar dat mag nooit uitlopen in een keuze tussen werk of God. We zijn hier niet om de zondag te vereren, dus is het geen probleem af en toe op zondag te werken. Probeer wel om de zondag in het algemeen vrij te houden, want die is er om ons aan Jezus te herinneren, voor onze broodnodige rust en om regelmatig en zonder afleiding aandacht aan God te geven.
What is the vocation of the lay faithful?
The lay faithful have as their own vocation to seek the Kingdom of God by illuminating and ordering temporal affairs according to the plan of God. They carry out in this way their call to holiness and to the apostolate, a call given to all the baptized [CCCC 188].
How do the lay faithful participate in the priestly office of Christ?
They participate in it especially in the Eucharist by offering as a spiritual sacrifice “acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5) their own lives with all of their works, their prayers, their apostolic undertakings, their family life, their daily work and hardships borne with patience and even their consolations of spirit and body. In this way, even the laity, dedicated to Christ and consecrated by the Holy Spirit, offer to God the world itself [CCCC 189].
Some opportune remedy must be found quickly for the misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class: for the ancient workingmen's guilds were abolished in the last century, and no other protective organization took their place… working men have been surrendered, isolated and helpless, to the hardheartedness of employers and the greed of unchecked competition [Pope Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum, 3].
